Study: DHA omega-3 ineffective for people with Alzheimer’s
Newly published results of a clinical study using DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid,
to treat mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s showed no slowing of cognitive or
functional decline, nor was there any change in the rate of brain atrophy over 18 months. DHA occurs naturally in the brain and is found in reduced amounts in people with Alzheimer's.
Previous research had suggested that mental decline could be slowed or
prevented by eating fish or taking supplements such as fish oil pills.
